Why is the Electronic Identification of the German National Identity Card required?

The eID function is necessary to ensure that only people who are entitled to use the KulturPass app register. Their age and place of residence (which must be in Germany) will be verified using electronic identification procedures in accordance with data protection regulations. At the beginning, this will be done by the Electronic Identification with the German National Identity Card.

The eID function is also open to EU and EEA citizens via the eID Card and to non-EU foreigners via the electronic residence title (“elektronischer Aufenthaltstitel/eAT”). To use the eID functions in the KulturPass app, you need either the five-digit transport PIN or the six-digit personal PIN.
